Most people think of summer gardens in full bloom - long evenings, lush borders, BBQs with friends. And while meteorological summer (June 1st–August 31st) is technically behind us, the UK is still in the last stretch of astronomical summer, which lasts until 22nd September. That means we’re in the final golden days before autumn truly arrives.
But here’s the surprising truth: when it comes to building your garden, winter might just be the smartest season of all.
Why Winter Works Best
1. Less disruption to your lifestyle
In summer, gardens are in constant use. In winter, you naturally spend more time indoors - so construction work causes less interruption to your day-to-day life.
2. Better for plants and structures
Cooler, wetter months provide ideal conditions for planting trees and shrubs, giving them time to establish strong roots before spring. Hard landscaping, too, often fares better in cooler temperatures, avoiding the risks of cracking or delays that hot, dry soil can bring.
3. Ready for Spring enjoyment
By building in winter, you step straight into a finished, flourishing garden as soon as the warmer weather returns. No waiting, no muddy delays - just a space that’s ready when you need it most.
4. Strategic planning
These last days of summer are the perfect time to start the design process. By the time autumn sets in, we can finalise plans, secure materials, and prepare for a smooth winter build.
5. Year-round expertise
At MRLandscapes, we design and build bespoke gardens throughout the year. Our winter schedule fills quickly, but we are currently taking bookings for autumn/winter 2025 projects.
Don’t wait until spring to begin. Use these last days of summer to plan ahead, and let us bring your dream garden to life - ready for you to enjoy when the sun returns.
