From City Life to Garden Design

Oscar’s journey into landscaping is anything but conventional. After several years working in the corporate world, he felt the pull towards something more hands on, creative, and rooted in the natural world. Driven by a lifelong love of gardens and outdoor spaces, Oscar retrained in garden design and landscape construction, eventually founding MRLandscapes in 2017.

What started as a personal pivot has grown into one of London’s most respected boutique landscaping businesses, with a portfolio spanning classic gardens, contemporary courtyards, and everything in between.

A Personalised, Client-Focused Approach

Oscar’s philosophy is simple: listen carefully, design thoughtfully, and deliver with precision. Under his leadership, MRLandscapes is known not just for its high standards, but for creating outdoor spaces that truly reflect the people who use them.

Each project starts with a conversation, where Oscar and his team work closely with clients to understand their needs, aspirations, and how they want to live in their gardens. From the first sketch to the final planting, the process is collaborative, transparent, and tailored to each individual.

Projects that Speak for Themselves

One of the stand-out projects under Oscar’s direction is the Hood Avenue garden in SW13. This ambitious transformation involved sculpting an overgrown plot into a layered, tranquil retreat, complete with resin-bound pathways, architectural pergolas, and immersive planting schemes. It’s a testament to Oscar’s ability to blend function and beauty with understated elegance.

Q&A with Oscar Marsland-Roberts

Q: What inspired you to start MRLandscapes?

Oscar: I always knew I wanted to work in a space where creativity met craftsmanship. Landscapes are unique - they change, grow, and evolve. Starting MRLandscapes was about combining my interest in design with a genuine love for nature and outdoor living.

I also wanted to create a company with a personal, human approach that clients could trust.

Q: What’s your design philosophy in a nutshell?

Oscar: Timeless over trendy. I think the best outdoor spaces are those that age well -gardens that feel like they belong to the property, not just the current moment. We focus on balance, scale, texture, and always try to design with longevity in mind.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your work?

Oscar: Seeing a client walk into their new garden for the first time. It never gets old. We put so much into each project - to see that joy and sense of pride on a client's face makes it all worthwhile.

Q: How do you approach sustainability?

Oscar: It’s integral to everything we do. From sourcing local materials to choosing plants that suit the microclimate, we try to reduce waste and increase biodiversity wherever possible. We also encourage our clients to think about water management and soil health as part of the design.

Q: What’s next for MRLandscapes?

Oscar: We're expanding both our design team and our on-site build capacity. We’ve got some exciting residential projects in the pipeline and we're also exploring collaborations with architects and interior designers to bring even more cohesion between indoor and outdoor spaces.
