At MRLandscapes, we know that great gardens start with great people. That’s why we’re excited to continue our MRL Spotlight series, a behind-the-scenes look at the talented individuals who bring our landscapes to life. Following our conversations with Gemma Charles and Anna Kolarska, this edition shines a light on Johnny Beck-Brown - one of our longest-standing team members whose craftsmanship and commitment help shape the gardens our clients love. From groundwork to mentoring, Johnny shares his journey, his values, and what it means to build more than just gardens.
From the Ground Up: Johnny’s Path into Landscaping
Johnny's route into landscaping was driven by a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a desire to create spaces people can truly enjoy. Over the years, what started as a practical interest has evolved into a full-fledged profession that blends technical skill with artistic flair.
He joined MRLandscapes early in the company’s journey, and his role has grown alongside the business. Today, Johnny is one of our most trusted team members, known for his can-do attitude, thoughtful approach to challenges, and pride in quality workmanship.
Q&A with Johnny Beck-Brown
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in landscaping?
Johnny: I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and being outdoors. Landscaping felt like a perfect mix of creativity and construction. I love the idea of transforming a bare or tired space into something beautiful and functional - something that makes people want to be outside more.

Q: Can you describe your journey with MRLandscapes and how your role has evolved?
Johnny: I started with MRLandscapes a few years ago and have grown with the company. At first, I was mostly on groundwork and hard landscaping - digging, setting foundations, brickwork, that kind of thing. Now, I take on a wider range of tasks, from installing intricate features to mentoring newer team members. The trust Oscar places in the team really motivates us to deliver.
Q: What aspects of landscaping do you find most rewarding?
Johnny: The transformation, definitely. Seeing the difference between day one and the finished garden is incredibly satisfying. But it’s also the reaction from the client, that’s what makes it feel worthwhile. You’re creating something that becomes part of their home and their lifestyle.

Q: Could you share a particularly challenging project you've worked on and how you approached it?
Johnny: One project that comes to mind had access issues – everything had to come through a narrow alleyway, including heavy paving slabs and soil for raised beds. We had to rethink the logistics completely. It took extra planning, more teamwork, and some creative thinking, but we got it done on time, and it looked amazing.
Q: How do you incorporate sustainability into your landscaping projects?
Johnny: We try to reuse and recycle materials wherever possible. We also source responsibly, using FSC-certified timber and native plants when we can. And we think about drainage and water use a lot, making sure gardens are built to last and don’t damage the environment.
Q: What trends are you currently observing in landscape design?
Johnny: Natural stone is still popular, but we’re seeing more interest in porcelain for its durability and clean look. People are also asking for wildlife-friendly spaces - things like pollinator plants, insect hotels, and water features. And there’s a definite shift toward low-maintenance gardens that still look great all year round.

Q: How do you balance client preferences with the natural characteristics of a site?
Johnny: Communication is key. We always respect what the client wants, but we’ll offer practical advice based on soil type, light levels, and long-term maintenance. It’s about finding the sweet spot where the garden works for the site and the person.
Q: What advice would you give to clients looking to enhance their outdoor spaces?
Johnny: Don’t rush. Good design takes time, and it’s worth investing in quality materials and proper preparation. Think about how you want to use the space, not just how it looks. And trust your landscaper’s experience - we want your garden to work just as much as you do.
Q: Are there specific plants or materials you prefer to use for their durability and aesthetic appeal?
Johnny: For materials, I like working with sandstone and oak, they age beautifully. For plants, I’m a big fan of evergreen structure like Pittosporum or Viburnum. And ornamental grasses, they add movement and texture without being high maintenance.
Q: How do you stay updated with new techniques and innovations in the landscaping industry?
Johnny: I keep an eye on industry publications, and we’re always learning from each other on site. Every project teaches you something new. We also work closely with designers, so you’re constantly being exposed to fresh ideas and approaches.
