Marlborough Crescent, W4 - Back Garden

The Brief
Chiswick garden design. Transforming a modern back garden into a contemporary oasis of calm.
Step into the world of accomplished London garden designer, Peter Sheard. Our team had the pleasure of transforming his remarkable vision into reality, creating this enchanting outdoor haven for our client in Chiswick. The brief was straightforward enough, to create a tapestry of natural beauty and ingenuity in a previously rather generic space.
A key focal point is the large clay pot water feature, sourced from Pots and Pithoi, which introduces the garden to a gentle symphony of trickling water, creating a soothing ambiance from the moment you step into the space.
The heart of this garden is a perfectly manicured circular(ish) lawn, graced with the elegance of inset stepping stones. This inviting pathway winds its way towards a charming summer house, a tranquil retreat nestled at the very end of the garden - a place designed to be enjoyed year-round.
The garden offers multiple seating areas strategically positioned to offer distinct perspectives of the landscape. Whether the owners are seeking a sunny spot to bask in the sun or a shaded nook for moments of contemplation.
A crowning achievement of this garden is its intricate planting plan, meticulously crafted to cater to the unique microclimates that coexist within this verdant oasis. Sun-dappled areas host an array of vibrant flowers, whilst shaded pockets are adorned with a unique mix of forest and structural planting. The resultant tapestry of colours and textures are testament to the artistry of Sheard’s original design.
One distinct feature of this project was the seamless integration of existing birch, Acer ilex and plane trees. Rather than overshadowing these majestic specimens, the garden design sought to enhance their positions, creating a harmonious union between the new and the old, the contemporary and the timeless.
The first-floor balcony presented an extra challenge, one that required the vision to ensure the garden's aesthetic charm was not limited to a ground-level view. From above, the garden is a captivating masterpiece, a visual delight that rewards those who admire it from a higher perspective.
This garden design project in Chiswick called for much more than simply a collection of well-placed features; it is a testament to the art of landscape gardening in London, a space where the boundaries between outdoor and indoor living blur.
